‘The beer is running short' was a whisper going around on the American themed Fete Day. Perhaps it was the only cloud on a glorious summer afternoon.
The fete was a great celebration of all that is best about living in and around Combs. The community turned out in droves to meet their neighbours, to enjoy an afternoon in the sunshine and to have lots of fun.
John Wark, the famous player from Ipswich Town, opened the fete and set the tone for the whole event.
The skills of the gardeners and creative people were admired at the Battisford and District Garden Club, 8th annual show. The number of entries smashed the previous record.
The vintage vehicles started the fete in procession, then parked and were inspected and appreciated.
A wide range of displays from the Army, local organisations and businesses provided plenty of stimulation for enquiring minds.
Throughout the afternoon and evening buskers, bands and majorettes entertained the crowd.
Dogs braved the heat to compete in the fun dog show, and intrepid humans competed too in the children's and adults' competitions and sports.
It was warm, too warm for some, but for most it was just what an English summer afternoon should be.
The ice cream sellers certainly found it worth coming.
Oh, and just in case you are wondering, some rapid replenishment made sure the beer did not run out.
The evening attracted many people back again, and some new groups, as they gathered to enjoy the barbecue and music.
By the end of the evening music sessions the beer was getting short again, but by then everyone was just content to bask in the fading light at the end of a perfect day.
Thank you to everyone who attended the fete or the fundraising events. It is your support that makes the fete a success and worthwhile.
Next year's fete will be on Saturday 2nd July 2016, so make sure you keep the day clear.
